What To Expect In Cabrera

Updated: Mar 5

Guys, you are in for a treat! The Cabrera Culture is so refreshing.

Here are some of the main things that stuck out to us on our visits as well as things that we feel you would want to know about.

No Traffic Laws:

Yep! Sounds scary but thankfully, you will not be operating a vehicle while here. On the bus ride you will see that there aren't stop lights and rarely any street signs whats so ever. Hey, at least we will make it to our destination quickly :) Watch the first 30 seconds of this video to see us driving through the town.

Cars:

It's rare to see cars in the town of Cabrera. Usually, only business owners and Americans drive cars. The Cabrera natives use motorcycles to get to place to place.

It's normal to see families up to 5 on a motorcycle with bags, babies, etc. Now that's talent lol

Drinking:

The legal age to drink in Cabrera is 18. You will see a lot of Dominicans sitting outside their homes drinking a cold brew. Everywhere we went, someone offered us a presidente lol (that's their corona).

Locals:

In Cabrera, the locals live very simple lives. They grow most of their food, have horses, cows, pigs, goats, chickens etc. They have a very strong sense of family and truly care about their neighbors. People are very giving and loving. Everyone knows everyone.

The living conditions in Cabrera range from huts to traditional houses but wifi & electronics are very limited.

Cops:

Don't be alarmed if you see the police. They carry large guns and look very intimidating but as long as you aren't starting trouble, they are very respectful. You may see them at some point as we cross from Cabrera into Orchid Bay. They have random stop points where they check drivers for their credentials.

Wild Dogs:

The dogs in Cabrera are everyone's dogs lol. Most of the dogs are wild and the locals feed them and look after them without actually owning them. They run free and are harmless. Don't worry though, there will not be any wild dogs where we are staying.

Orchid Bay:

Orchid Bay is a private terrace outside of Cabrera. It is a fully gated community with 24hr security. All of our villas share the same private beach and are short walking distance apart.

We rented all of the villas to the right (the ones with access the beach) Tres Amaras, Flor De Cabrera + Suites & Sunrise Villa.

The views:

Each villa has a unique ocean view. Your view will be determined on your room but here are some images to give you an idea of the main view from each of the villas main pool area.

The Weather:

Literally the perfect weather! It barely rains, and when it does, it's quick in and out. The temperature is warm but the ocean breeze keeps you cool. All the villas have air condition but honestly, you won't need it.

We hope you are just as excited as we are to experience the Dominican Culture and Orchid Bay!
